Dear TeachUsTech’ers,

If you already have a Gmail address, you can read and send your Gmail messages directly from the Mail app that comes with your iPhone. This guide will walk you through how to connect your Gmail account so new emails arrive automatically in the Mail app.

You will only need to do this setup once for each Gmail account you want to add.

These newsletters are made to be printed and kept nearby, so feel free to mark them up and write your own notes in the margins. If you have a friend that would appreciate this but don’t know how to forward emails yet, you can view our very first newsletter here on “How to Forward an Email”.

Before you begin

  • Your iPhone, turned on and unlocked.

  • Your Gmail email address and password (for example: [email protected]).

  • A Wi‑Fi or cellular data connection.

Step 1 – Open the Settings App

On your Home screen, look for the Settings app. It looks like the silver gear icon below. Tap Settings once to open it.

Step 2 – Go to Mail Settings

In Settings, scroll down and tap Apps. If you do not see Mail right away, tap in the Search box at the top and type “Mail”, then tap Mail when it appears in the results.

Step 3 – Open Mail Accounts

On the Mail settings screen, tap Mail Accounts. This is where you can see and add email accounts on your iPhone.

Step 4 – Choose Add Account

On the Mail Accounts screen, tap Add Account. This tells your iPhone you want to add a new email account.

Step 5 – Select Google

You will see a list of email providers. Tap Google. This will open a Google sign‑in page inside Settings.

Step 6 – Enter Your Gmail Address

On the Google sign‑in screen, tap in the Email or phone box and type your full Gmail address (for example: [email protected]). Then tap Next.

Step 7 – Enter Your Gmail Password

On the next screen, type your Gmail password carefully. If you want to double‑check it, you can tap Show password. When you are finished, tap Next.

Step 8 – Allow iOS to connect to your Google account

You may see one or two Google messages asking you to confirm that you want to sign in to iOS with this Google account. Read the screens, then tap Continue on each one.

Step 9 – Choose what to sync and keep your calendars

You will now see a screen with switches for Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Notes. Make sure Mail is turned on (green). Turn on Contacts and Calendars if you also want those to sync with your iPhone.

If you see a message about Existing Local Calendars, choose Keep on My iPhone to keep any calendars already on your phone. Then tap Save in the top‑right corner.

Step 10 – Open the Mail App and check your inbox

Press your Home button or swipe up to return to your Home screen. Look for the Mail app icon shown below and tap it. You should now see your Gmail inbox inside the Mail app. New Gmail messages will appear here automatically.

That’s it!

Your email should be up and running on your phone now. Happy emailing!
